According to the Robesonian Online, the Robeson Board of Commissioners and animal advocates have come to an agreement that Robeson County will no longer use the heart stick as a method of euthanasia, but switch to the more humane intravenous method of murdering perfectly healthy animals.

Perfectly healthy animals - murdered

Let’s Adopt! USA applauds the first step in the right direction as a interim solution.

However, we would like to see Robeson County working closer with the local Humane Society and the community to create the first NC NO-KILL municipal animal shelter.

This can be achieved by educating the public and holding free spay/neuter clinics at least twice a year.

We strongly recommend that the Robesonian Newspaper will use its resources to be a main supporter of such events, by offering free advertising space for sponsoring businesses and participating Veterinarians.

Veterinarians should also be offered a local tax incentive for every animal they altered under a county wide spay/neuter voucher system.

See Portland, Oregon based POPPA as a wonderful example on how it can work.

Please spread the word and help Robeson to become a truly humane county!

  • realistically this is good news. for them to go from outright abuse to no-kill would be a bit radical. hopefully we can continue to make progress and become more like the poppa model.

    well done everyone!

    • yes that would be a radical concept and I believe it’s something that can be achieved. Not in a week or a month, but it can be set as a goal by the county and worked towards.
Right now we’re only seeing “waste” management.
Animals are not waste – they are sentient beings, who deserve our kindness and best care we have to offer. Otherwise they shouldn’t have been born in the first place.
We must lead the county into creating a spay/neuter program. It’s the only way to curb the problem – other than keeping an eye on shelter management…

  • I am sorry but this falls short of all that needs to be done!! They need to clean house…get rid of all the animal abusers there that actually enjoy torturing and abusing helpless animals! Anything short of this is unacceptable!!!

    • An independent investigation into Jeff Bass’ activities is definitely on the short list of what we would like to see done.

  • Margie….There are already real changes at Robeson, under the management of a real animal lover at last, Icant remember her name at the moment. She has a good team working with her too, people that actually care about the animals for a change! They actually adopted out over 100 dogs since Bass left, and the place is definately looking a lot better, with beds, proper cleaning and proper care and attention to all animals. There is still a lot of work to be done to make Robeson a respectable place for strays, but with a very good response from volunteers things are getting better. As always, they are desperate for more Rescues to come forward to take the dogs they cannot home immediately. It has been a long time coming, but eventually the name of Robeson will not instill fear into the mind of all animal lovers as it used too, but be a place where it is safe for dogs and cats to await their new homes. The fight to remove Bass was well worth the tears I shed and every e.mail that was sent in complaint of his brutality!!!

  • Read this link folks…http://www.examiner.com/x-35713-Animal-Rights-Examiner~y2010m7d23-Update-Robeson-County-Animal-Shelter-progress

Things can only get better for Robeson and its babies !!

  • I do think things are returning to the bad old days. I see recent photos of dogs at Robeson with no bedding. The recent inspection report, which Robeson failed, outlined issues such as bedding, no cat litter. in adequate food. Also the centre still uses bleach – known cancer causing and can burn paws and sting eyes. Also the new manager is putting dogs healthy dogs down although they have a rescue in place and not explaining why. They still have mass culls and although the centre manager said dogs were looked at regularly 3 times a day, still one puppy died of parvo in a pool of blood unnoticed, left among its litter mates.
