Kelly, thanks for your reply to this post.
The original author is no longer with the group. However I stand behind what the author has written.
I commend you for the changes you have made in your life and your support of spay/neuter laws as well as educating the public.
On the other hand I have to disagree with you statement of "<em>heartstick</em>" not being first choice. The notorious Robeson County, NC municipal pound has not only used <em>heartsticking</em> as their preferred method of murdering perfectly healthy animals, they are under investigation for not using mandatory sedation first.
There are numerous accounts of such violations around the country.
About walking a mile in your shoes - I've worked with many municipal as well as no-kill shelters and rescues.
I have had numerous animals die in my arms - all of them were put to sleep intravenously - all of them because they were terminally ill and/or close to death and/or suffering.
This should be the only reason an animal is put to sleep - not for space - to make room for another death row candidate.
It's really not so hard to understand, once you understand the real concept of no-kill. We are "no-kill" all the way - no exceptions! Not "a little kill" like many publically funded SPCAs and so-called Humane Societies.

I'm sorry you are offended by the original author calling the kettle black. It is the truth.
A butcher in a slaughterhouse makes a conscious decision to murder animals for living.
A EUTHANASIA tech makes that same choice. Why? Either because the power of taking a beings life or it's because it pays the bills.
It's either one or both. Otherwise you can't do this job EVERY DAY!
So, don't be offended - realize what you did for living was not the right thing to do and move on to better things. It sounds like you have. So kudos to you after all.

I know this post is old but I wanted to respond anyway, since I am a former Euthanasia Technician here in North Carolina.

The first point I want to make to you is that a "heart stick" injection is not what any shelter would use as a primary method of euthanasia by injection, as intravenous would always be first, except in the case of cats, in which an intra peritoneal injection is commonly used. So there is no sense in going on some big campaign to stop heart stick injections.. the only time anyone should be using that method is on a completely unconscious animal.
I had excellent training at the Denver Dumb Friends League in Colorado and I know how to perform a heart-stick, but I myself have only used it on animals who were far beyond feeling it. (if you want details, just ask).

To shed light on the subject, at one time a heart stick injection appeared to be humane, as it caused an instant death. After it was discovered to be very painful, (it works like a heart attack), it was discontinued as a primary method of lethal injection.

Gas Chambers are archaic and should be banned. I have only witnessed one in use on one occasion in my life, in New Bern, NC, during my re-certification training by none other than Dr. Ralph Houser, who, as previously stated in this post, makes and sells gas chambers and so has a vested interest in them remaining in use.. Dr. Houser assured us that the howls we were hearing were only "air decompressing from the animals' lungs", but my co-workers and I never bought his story.
The sound of the dogs howling in the gas chamber will haunt me for the rest of my life.

My thought is that not only do we need more strict spay/neuter laws to bring down the numbers of animals killed in our nation's shelters, but we need to make it socially unacceptable to breed dogs and cats or to buy purebred animals. Until people can make the connection between the breeding of dogs and cats to the killing of animals in our shelters, this is never going to stop. Silence equals complicity, and if your friend is showing you their brand-new purebred puppy, or worse, a "designer crossbreed" , your reaction needs to be of disapproval. Speak up!
Likewise to your neighbor with that cat always having kittens.

The last thing I would like to say is that I personally quit eating animals in 1986.
Fur and leather quickly left my closet soon after. I went to work in an animal shelter because I cared about animals and wanted to help, and unless you have walked a mile in my shoes you have no right to judge. Your statement that shelter workers are ..." made to carry out such acts just to receive a paycheck and health insurance". is really rude and offensive to me.

Sorry about my confusion, Silvia! When you mentioned the municipality dumping dogs, my brain assumed Istanbul. I've never had a chance to go to Adana. The closest I have been is probably toward Konya. I've always wanted to see Gaziantep and the far east of the country. Perhaps on the next trip!

I think many folks in North Carolina - and definitely folks outside North Carolina - aren't even aware of the horrors occurring in the state's rural shelters. It's heartbreaking, and the best we can try to do with this blog is raise awareness and provide a platform for getting the message out.

Thanks again for taking the time to follow our blog. Hope your daughter in Charlottesville also knows about us!

Thanks for your reply, Julia. I am not in Istanbul, I live in Adana in the south of Turkey (close to the "famous" Incirlik military base)and we are way too few here. We do what we can and try to stay sane.
I graduated from the University of Maryland in 1984. I still know the area quite well but at the time I guess there wasn't too much awareness about cats and dogs living in the streets.
I also lived for two years in Cary, NC. I could never imagine what was going on there! I sent the link to one of my friends there who had adopted a dog from a shelter. Of course the dog's name was Lucky. Now I realize how lucky she really was!
These blogs are excellent tools to raise awareness among people. This is the only way we can get something done. Keep on with the good work! And thanks again!

Thanks for your comments, Silvia, and for following our blog all the way from Turkey! There is suffering all around the world when it comes to animals. Some things in the US are "better" than in Turkey, but we definitely still have our problems. We must continue to speak up on behalf of animals and fight for their protection! Susanne Kogut of the Charlottesville SPCA is speaking at this year's No Kill Conference: http://www.nokillconference.org/speakers.html . I studied in Washington, DC, for several years and got to know some of the animal workers in the DC/Maryland/Virginia area. The only national advocacy group for feral cats also happens to be in that area! My blog post is all about the dogs on Bali. Hope you'll find time to read it! Thanks for all the good work you're doing in Istanbul.

Hi Julia! Thank you so much for your article. While the video was loading I began to feel nauseous so I'll leave it for another day. I have reached my threshold on dog suffering for today! I agree with everything that you say, especially the idea that breeding must be prohibited. But of course that would lead to illegal methods and the puppies would pay the toll once again. My daughter lives in Charlottesville, VA and she volunteers at the shelter (SPCA,no-kill) there. The shelter seems to work just fine and can be an example for their North Carolina neighbors. Here in Turkey is quite another story. Shelters are concentration camps so I am just trying to keep the dogs alive wherever they are dumped by the municipality, hoping they don't get poisoned or tortured.
I'm glad to know there are people like you in the US. Keep on fighting!
